LOCATION:
39°55 S,   71°04 W  - Junín de los Andes is a village in the province of Neuquén, Argentina.  It has 10,592 inhabitants as of the 2001 census [INDEC], and is the head town of the Huiliches Department.  It is located in the south of the province, by the Chimehuin River, on National Route 234, about 35 km north of San Martín de los Andes and 17 km from the Chapelco Airport, which services the area. In spring and summer, it's a famous place for birdwatching  and fly fishing.

WEATHER:
The climate of Junín de los Andes,  is mild-cold in summer and cold and humid in winter, with relatively cool summers and long winters.  The presence of several lakes in the area serve as regulators and make a very pleasant climate.
Average annual rainfall 2000 mm. The highest rainfall recorded is in the winter season (May to July), and lower the late spring and early summer (November to January).  In summer, temperatures range between 20 ° C and 30 ° C during the day and night descends between 10 ° C and 5 ° C.

HISTORY:
Its origins date back to pre-Hispanic times, when people ( Tehuelches and Mapuches aborigins) shares these immense natural, living product of nature gave them and paying tribute to the "Mapu" (Earth) and "Nguenechén" (God) gifts year after year, they received of their benevolence.  Then with the advance of troops organized by General Julio A. Roca began to arrive "huincas" (white men, in the Mapuche language), who, with intent to extend the sovereignty of the young nation Argentina, fought fierce battles with the natives.  In 1882, an outpost of the army arrived Yconiyén (valley of the Chacayal), also called Cum Cum Niyeu (meeting place around a cairn), depression in today is the city of Junín de los Andes. There he raised the first fort. This first step left hundreds dead on both sides.
A new expedition set out for this Chimehuín Valley in 1883 with the mission to lay the groundwork for a population the express request of Cardinal Cagliero, who was convinced he had conquered the native through the gospel.
He says the place to build the fort was chosen by Sgt. Major E. Vidal, who was in command of the unit, which the inhabitants of the city is now considered its founder.

Initially the settlement was generally cold call, but came to be called Junin de los Andes. Derived from the Aymara word Junín "hunins" meaning "pasture."  During the early years, was more a military outpost than a village, but a new chapter opened with the arrival of the priests and Juan Domingo Milanesio salecianos Ruggerone in 1892, who visited the area as a missionary.  Milanesio father settled permanently in 1895 and founded the house saleciana, with two schools to serve native children, providing food, education and evangelization.  Over time, the first inhabitants were settled, which transformed the "pampa" in a booming livestock of Neuquen. In fact, the Sociedad Rural de Junín de los Andes organizes each year, a cattle show takes place in late January, having been founded in 1933.

Within the history of Junin de los Andes, has great proximity inportancia Lanin Volcano, respected and feared by the natives. The first of those is uncertain which amounted Laroute were Mr. and Howart in 1933. Another former resident who has climbed the volcano on several occasions and which has been honored with the distinction of a distinguished citizen and a villager who has dedicated a book is Mr. Vidal Pérez, quen, currently at 82 years old can describe absolute certainty each of his climbs.  In 1945 the town was declared a National Decree, Municipality of Junín de los Andes, along with two other cities Neuquén, San Martin de los Andes and Cutral-Co. This is the first foundation registered in Neuquen, this means that it is the oldest city of Neuquen.  Today, people of all races and religions live in the area, attracted by the beauty of the place, unexploited resources and quality of life that ensures peace and prosperity.

WHAT TO DO?:
Currently, Junin de los Andes is well known for the construction of the Via Christi, Way Jesus went to his death and resurrection, the way that man passes on his pilgrimage through life. The Via Christi also represents one of the most important religious attractions in the region and imposing, which combines elements of Catholic tradition and the Mapuche.  Since 2000, all Fridays are thousands of people at the foot of Cerro de la Cruz, to start the course and finish at the summit, ruled by a white cross.  Throughout the tour you can see between nature, amazing works of religious art that highlight the features of Aboriginal communities in the area and make a parallel between the life of indigenous peoples, Laura Vicuña, Ceferino Namuncura and life of Jesus. This magnificent work was designed by architect Alejandro Santana.
